Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo played an important role in Ricardo Quaresma’s 117th minute winner as Portugal beat Croatia 1-0 on Saturday night.
Despite impressing in the group stage, Croatia were eliminated at the last 16 stage and 30-year-old midfielder Luka Modric was almost inconsolable at the full time whistle.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe were seen trying to console their Real Madrid teammate on the pitch at the full time whistle and Cristiano Ronaldo explained why he chose not to celebrate the crucial win.
“Of course, I am happy that we beat Croatia,” said Cristiano. “However, I couldn’t celebrate on the field because my brother Luka Modric was crying. It is my duty to comfort my brother”.
Led by Cristiano Ronaldo, a far from inspiring Portugal side have managed to reach the quarter finals of Euro 2016 without securing a win in 90 minutes.
Having narrowly beaten Croatia on Saturday night, Portugal will fancy themselves against Poland in the quarters.
