Erik Hamren’s side, who drew with Ireland and were beaten by Italy prior to their second stalemate of the tournament, knew that they needed to win to remain in the competition.
However, Radja Nainggolan’s late goal ensured that Belgium progressed in second place, knocking Sweden out in the process.
Italy, meanwhile, progress from the group as winners, while Republic of Ireland join Belgium in the last-16 after their dramatic 1-0 win over the Azzurri.
