In a move that has left many Nigerians reeling, MTN has increased the cost of its 15GB weekly data plan from N2,000 to a staggering N6,000. The sudden price hike has sparked widespread outrage, with many taking to social media to express their discontent.
The news came as a shock to many, who felt that the increase was excessive and unfair. “Imagine MTN increasing their tariff by 200% overnight without prior notice to customers,” tweeted @gbolahan2211. “This is no way to do things, man.”
Others were more defiant, with @GIFTy6286 remarking, “If they like, they should increase it to N1 million. We will survive.” However, many others were not so optimistic, expressing concerns about how the price hike would affect their ability to access the internet.
“This sudden price increase is wild!” wrote @AfrokonnectNG. “How are people supposed to cope with such an outrageous hike? Internet access is essential for work, education, and staying connected, yet it’s being priced like a luxury.”
The price hike has also raised questions about the lack of competition in the Nigerian telecoms market. “Una see say @AirtelNigeria and @GloWorld are two oloriburuku and backward set of network providers…. MTN will continue to do as they please with their tariffs and prices because they know these other two useless network providers can’t match them,” tweeted @damilarebellz.
As the backlash continues to grow, it remains to be seen how MTN will respond to the criticism. One thing is certain, however: Nigerians will not take this price hike lying down.
