Afrobeat sensation David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, recently paid a visit to Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya in Times Square, New York.
Tunde Onakoya, founder of Chess in Slums Africa, has been striving to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon since Wednesday, April 17th.
The 29-year-old chess prodigy has been immersed in the intense chess marathon, playing tirelessly for hours without a single defeat. The marathon is scheduled to conclude by 8 pm on April 19th.
Numerous Nigerians have flocked to New York to show their support for Onakoya, including singer Adekunle Gold, Nigeria’s Consul-General in New York City, Ambassador Peter Egopija, and Omoyele Sowore, among others.
Davido, who is currently in New York after a successful concert at Madison Square Garden, has also declared his support for Onakoya’s endeavor.
Sharing updates on his X account on Thursday, Onakoya wrote, “Game number 100. 87 against my main opponent #CoachShawnMar. 13 against external challengers. We are now 31 hours in, with 27 to go! That puts us officially past the halfway mark. It’s looking possible now. Keep streaming, keep donating.”
In a video making the rounds online, Davido, could be seen with his wife, Chioma and his manager, Asa Asika, as he joined the scene. A musical band accompanying him begins playing one of his popular songs. The ‘Unavailable’ hit maker starts dancing amidst the cheers from the attendees.
Voices of others in attendance can be heard expressing their admiration for Davido, while Tunde Onakoya remains focused on his chess game, aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.
