A Nigerian media personality, Sea King, has shared his experience in Kirikiri prison after being arrested for criticizing the police and some politicians.
Sea King was granted bail of N500,000 after being in police custody. He took to Instagram to recount his time in prison, where he met inmates who had been locked up since 1999 for minor offenses, such as stealing and buying a stolen generator.
He observed that the prison was filled with poor people who have no voice, leading him to wonder if there’s a separate prison for the rich. Sea King’s experience highlights the country’s systemic issues and the need for reform.
“Person dey inside kiriki, them say e still generator, him wey steal the generator, the person wey him sell the generator to, two of them dey inside Kirikiri. Poor Nigerians na him full Kirikiri. I ask myself when I enter Kirikiri, shey Kirikiri for the rich dey?”
