Harvey Mason Jr., the Chief Executive Officer of the Recording Academy responsible for the Grammy Awards, revealed in a circulating video how winners are selected for the prestigious music awards.
The 66th Grammy Awards took place on February 4th, 2024, at Crypto.com Arena in Downtown Los Angeles. Unfortunately, no Nigerian artists, including Davido, Burna Boy, Olamide, Asake, Ayra Starr, and Tems, received any awards.
In the interview, the CEO explained that the only way for artists to win a Grammy depends on the votes of the Recording Academy’s membership. To be a member, one must be a music industry professional working in the United States.
He clarified that the selection process involves submitting the music of qualified artists for the year. Members then listen to the submissions and evaluate the quality of the art, without considering factors like sales, streams, fans, or followers. The process excludes journalism, community input, and the involvement of music labels.
The CEO emphasized that since it’s based on the voting of Recording Academy members, opinions are involved, making it subjective. He concluded by stating that there is no objective measure for determining the “better” song or rap.
