Nigerian chess master and founder of Chess in Slum Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest individual chess marathon, clocking in an impressive 58 hours of non-stop play.

His endurance surpassed the previous record of 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds, held by Norwegians Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad.

Tunde Onakoya, renowned for his efforts in empowering children in slum areas through chess, commenced his marathon on Wednesday, April 17, at the iconic Times Square in New York. Throughout the challenge, he played over 150 games undefeated, alongside his US partner Shawn Martinez and other chess enthusiasts.

The 29-year-old native of Oyo aimed to raise $1 million in funds and awareness to provide educational opportunities for underprivileged children across Africa. As of his achievement, donations amounted to $92,808. In a show of sheer determination, he extended his tournament by an additional 2 hours, totaling 60 hours.

Despite encountering health challenges such as intense vomiting and stomach pain during the marathon, Tunde’s resilience prevailed, keeping him focused on his goal.

Support for Onakoya poured in from fans and well-wishers both locally and internationally, with many eagerly awaiting official recognition from the Guinness Book of Records.

Notable figures including President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as well as musicians Davido and Adekunle Gold, joined the chorus of support for Onakoya’s historic achievement.

Taking to his account via X app, Tunde wrote, “We’re pushing to 60 hours guys. We’re not stopping yet. Let’s keep going.  We have a fundraising goal to meet for the education of African children around the world. This is our why – the reason we are doing this.”

“Let’s demonstrate to the world the incredible power of love. Together, we can make this happen.”
