Nigerian chess expert and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has maintained an undefeated streak since he began his 58-hour individual Chess Marathon with the goal of breaking the Guinness World Record.
Known for his philanthropic endeavors throughout Nigeria, Tunde has been engaged in the chess marathon for 17 hours straight, triumphing over all opponents, including US national chess master Shawn Martinez.
The marathon, taking place in New York’s iconic Times Square, commenced on Wednesday, April 17th, and is set to conclude on Friday, April 19th.
Tunde’s objective is to surpass the current Guinness World Record holders, Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad of Norway, who played for 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds on November 11, 2018.
Nigerians worldwide have been rallying behind Tunde, with many visiting Times Square to witness his feat. Nigerian politicians, celebrities, and dignitaries such as Yemi Osibanjo, Tony Elumelu, Adekunle Gold, Funke Akindele, and more have voiced their support for him.
Through his X account, Onakoya emphasized that his endeavor is driven by the aspirations of millions of children across Africa who lack access to education.
