I always wanted to be an actress; I got into music because I had crush on a guy – Tiwa Savage reveals

Tiwa Savage, the renowned Afrobeat singer, recently shared insights into her early career aspirations during a interview with MTV Live while promoting her upcoming movie project, “Water and Garri“.

Surprisingly, Tiwa confessed that her initial career choice was acting, not music. She revealed that her entry into music was motivated by a crush she had on a guy who frequently associated with artists.

Despite her confessed passion for acting, Tiwa makes her debut in Nollywood with her self-produced film “Water and Garri”. Set to premiere on Prime Video on May 10, the film, directed by Meji Alabi, follows the story of Aisha, played by Tiwa Savage, an ambitious fashion designer returning to her home country after a decade abroad due to a family loss.

During the interview, Tiwa reiterated that her original intention was to pursue acting due to her fondness for it, but she found herself drawn to the music industry because of her admiration for the guy associated with musicians.

In her words, “I’ve always wanted to do acting. Acting was one of my first love before music. I got into music because I had a crush on a guy and he was always around the musician so I said ‘yeah, forget acting and just go into music”.

“So this is a full circle moment for me, coming back into acting. Executive producing is like a dream for me. Acting is very difficult because you have to prepare. I had to take two months of acting classes to get into this particular role and for me it was hard to adjust back. It is fun to not be myself for a few weeks.”

She also revealed she has an upcoming album which is “more RnB than Afro”. The release date of the project was, however, not disclosed.

“I have an album coming up, it is more RnB than Afro. Well, it is mix of Afrobeats but it is definitely more RnB. I have some great collaborations on there too but I can not say them here,” she added.

Savage recently said ‘Water and Garri’, will be released on Prime Video in 240 countries. The movie title originates from the singer’s 2021 EP.
