A trans woman in the United States has expressed her outrage and frustration after receiving a new passport with her gender changed to male, despite having undergone full medical transition and having all other documents identify her as female.
Perysian Zaya Mekhi shared a video showing her passport bio page, which displays her photo dressed as a woman, but with an “M” marked as her gender. She explained that this change occurred after the current administration’s policy canceled recognition of transgender individuals.
Zaya stated that she has been fully surgically altered to become female, and all her other documents, including her driver’s license and social security card, identify her as female. However, the US Passport Agency changed her gender to male, citing a previous passport she had when she was younger, which listed her as male.
Zaya argued that this decision is unfair and ignores her current identity and medical transition. She announced that she will be seeking legal action to correct her passport and ensure that her gender identity is respected.
“This is what it’s like being transgender under this new administration,” Zaya said. “I’m an adult, and I’ve undergone my full medical transition. There’s nothing about me that represents male on the exterior whatsoever.”
