Nigerian activist VeryDarkMan has issued an ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu’s government, threatening to take action if the underage kids imprisoned for displaying Russian flags during a hunger protest in August 2024 aren’t released by Tuesday. VeryDarkMan, who has 1.8 million followers, plans to start a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for their bail, emphasizing that even small donations of N100 can make a difference.
The activist, who was previously detained and granted N2M bail, claims the kids are malnourished and forgotten in detention. He rejects the Police PRO’s assertion that none of the detainees are under 13 years old, stating he’s seen them personally.
The bail conditions set by the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s justice system require each child to pay N10M, provide two sureties (civil servants), and valid identification. VeryDarkMan condemns this as heartless and unfair.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also criticized President Tinubu’s government for the minors’ arrest and detention. The situation highlights concerns about the treatment of juveniles in the Nigerian justice system.
